US-36 HazMat Spill Update

The Town of Lyons and the Lyons Fire Protection District continues to communicate  information regarding the hazardous material spill that happened on Tuesday, April 27 around noon time, along US-36 westbound just before the Apple Valley Bridge. 

Efforts at the scene of the April 27th gasoline tanker spill northwest of Lyons, have transitioned from the emergency phase to the project phase.  EPA, Colorado State Patrol, CDPHE, and Boulder County continue oversight of the work.  Lyons Fire Protection District continues to provide fire support.

Response contractors have completed excavation of the contaminated soils and begun backfilling the area.  Contaminated soils are being transferred off-site for disposal and this work is expected to continue through the end of next week.  Once the contaminated soils are removed, response contractors will begin restoration of the impacted properties.  EPA does not expect any road closures over the weekend due to site work.

EPA understands some residents along the river continue to voice concerns about their drinking water wells.  As EPA has previously announced, the potential for groundwater impact is low and there is no indication that there has been, or will be, any impact to water wells along the creek.  The insurance company for the Responsible Party and is working directly with the residents who would like to have their wells tested.

All concerns and questions regarding conditions in North St. Vrain Creek, including information related to the fish kill, should be directed to the CPW and can be sent to:  LyonsFishInfo@state.co.us.
